You pretty much hit the nail on the head there. No single band created grunge, but Neil Young is the one who you could first hear those rough grungy guitars. Not just like a hurricane, cinnamon girl, hey hey my my (into the black), and my my hey hey (into the blue) rockin in the free world, Powderfinger, Sedan delivery a ton of other rockers. His acoustic stuff is just as much too. Neil’s guitar playing both acoustic and electric is so rough and dry that it makes you thirsty.
Nevermind and In Utero are very different. it’s apples and oranges, really. (I fucking LOVE that phrase btw “it’s apples and oranges…”)
Nevermind is waaaaaay more polished and radio friendly. think you’d ever hear Radio Friendly Unit Shifter played on the radio? prolly not. Heart Shaped Box, sure. but think of Nevermind. that cd always gets a lot of airplay. I’d hafta give the nod to Nevermind…but In Utero is better if I’m in the right mood. peace.

The solo on Pennyroyal Tea sounds more like Neil Young than even Mr. Young himself at times. Sounds like Young down to the smallest detail.
